It’s Harvest Time!

We are excited to share that our sweet hanging clusters of grapes are ready to be harvested!

The vines that we have carefully cared for all year long are hanging full of fruit.

Hanging full of sugar filled juicy grapes that are good to eat right in the field, or canned for juice or jelly.

This is Isabela’s first harvest that she is walking and grabbing at the clusters.

Love Jackson’s smile to his daddy. Love it more how hard of a worker he constantly is!

Boots, skirt, crown, and buckets. All things needed for a successful harvest!

We are full of joy that the late spring freeze did not destroy all of this year’s crop!

“Big Red Barn”, 8/31/12

Linking to my feelings the importance of putting books in our children’s hands comes this post. I plan to place our thoughts of a few of our favorite books from time to time. My hope is to track pieces of literature that have been an important part of learning in the lives of my children.

The first book I chose was “The Big Red Barn” by Margaret Wise Brown. I selected this book because it is hands down a favorite for all three, the title I have placed in each of their baby books, and the single title we have put in the hands of our expectant mother friends for their new babies. Intended as a board book for baby to toddler, as both Abigail the toddler, and Isabela the baby, truly adore the pictures, holding the book, and imitating the sounds as they play farm. I can say it is timeless, as my five year old emergent reader continues to enjoy.
Animals seem to captivate the attention of every eye, at least the eyes of my three! It is one of their first connections to the world around them. The animals here are so calm and friendly. “In this story the children are away. Only the animals are here today.” This story celebrates life on the farm from the perspective of the animals where “they play all day in the grass and in the hay”. The wonderful illustrations include the “big red barn in the great green field” as well as every animal a child associates living on a farm. There is even “an old scarecrow leaning on his hoe in a field of corn”. All of this living takes place from the early part of the day and concludes when “the moon sailed high in the dark night sky”.
“The Big Red Barn” has simple rhyming vocabulary with wonderful pictures. This story celebrates all things farm life and animals. The rhythm of the book has a tranquil flow almost like a song. The simple text is easily memorized therefore making it an easy pick.
I remember when Jackson was around two he sat with this book and recited word for word the story. His confidence booming, his heart beaming with excitement, as he felt he knew how to read. Over and over he “read.” In the car or on the floor he continued to take the first steps of reading, linking his brain to the words he had heard many times before. Words that were concrete in his memory. Going through the phases of mocking me with his finger moving across the words quickly, to even being proud that he could shut the book and read the words without looking!
As an emergent reader, I watched him one Saturday several weeks ago realize he knew the words on every page. He not only knew them from memory, he could actually READ those words. That is the beat to a teacher’s heart when she realizes her student can read, when a student discovers the joy of really knowing the text word for word.
He had been reading since about March some of the things I had placed in front of him during school, but this was the first connection to something familiar. He was proud! Right there he felt like a reader. He realized the fun of words and most importantly the fun of learning something new!
An amazing book for our family. A classic treasure.

Cultivate their love of literature, share a good book!

Isabela LOVES the horses, we LOVE her imitation!

First Field Trip, 8/28/12

All three children and I participated in our first co-op field trip on a HOT day earlier this week. We visited McBee Dairy Farm in Mascot, Tennessee. We joined a homeschool group from Kodak and had a wonderful time. We were able to see many new calfs, chickens, horses, and ducks. They were also given an opportunity to milk a goat and chase some pigs as well as taste fresh homemade ice cream made there from the real milk on the farm!
Isabela is missing in the below pictures because she enjoyed her view of the animals strapped to me in the BJORNE carrier! Just for kicks I added one of her below.

Nothing Can Replace a Good Book! 8/31/2012

I can’t find anything in this world for our children more enriching than a good book. A book with fantastic pictures as well as text can soon become a child’s best friend in this fast paced world! From their earliest development we as parents have followed the studies and read to our babies. As a teacher I can’t express enough how this early intervention helps later in the classroom. Books are such an exciting way to stimulate our children’s brain. The development of letter recognition and expanding vocabulary, later fosters listening, comprehension, and writing skills.
Directly we allow our children to imagine, learn, become curious, and be enthusiastic about the world around them. Through characters of people or animals our children can discover what to love, find courage in, resolve problems of, and have empathy for most of life’s situations.
Books boost confidence in our children and create uncounted hours of bonding between parent and child. The more we read to children, the more they enjoy literature. The more they enjoy reading, the better readers they will become. A good reader is usually always a good student. Inspire reading in your life. At a minimum children should be read to for at least twenty minutes scattered throughout the day. As they grow they will still have the need to be read to, but they also should have the skill reading orally to anyone else for correct pronunciation, enhancing their language skills making it easier to express themselves in their lives. Put a book in the hands of a child and they quickly can discover anything is possible.

In our home we have been very fortunate to be a part of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Each of our children have been registered since they were born. Associated with “Books From Birth Foundation” by Gov. Bredesen in 2004, all of Tennessee’s ninety-five counties put books in the hands of children. From birth to age five, each child monthly receives a book in the mail from Dolly’s Imagination Library. Helping to foster a love of reading in children, Dolly Parton says, “The seeds of dreams are often found in books.” As mommies, excited about our children’s future, let’s plant these seeds early so too our children can continue pursuing dreams, reading and changing their world!

The pictures below are early days of falling in love with books. I LOVE the one of Jackson reading to Abigail in March of 2009.

Field Trip, Smokies Stadium 2012

Thanks Papaw and Nana for the game tickets celebrating Jackson’s fifth birthday! We were finally able to use them and had a wonderful time. So many good moments and special memories made at the stadium. One of the greatest was making it to the Jumbotron! Jackson and Abigail couldn’t believe they were on the big screen!

20120904-221200.jpg
They enjoyed the biggest bucket of popcorn their mommy has ever let them dig into. Also, Jackson thinks we should get these folding seats for home!

20120904-221929.jpg
Pre-game entertainment! “What’s growing that they are watering, why does that boy have that hose around his neck?” These kind of questions/comments are constant and always make me smile!

20120904-222503.jpg
Sweet baby girl! She enjoyed it all, the cheers, the food(minus the popcorn),and the action.

20120904-224132.jpg
Abigail was asked if she was wearing the crown because it was her birthday. Our answer, “not her birthday, she’s a princess everyday!” We love her excitement for life and her love for all things around her. She too wants game tickets for her birthday papaw!

20120904-224642.jpg
Jackson truly loves the game of baseball! He was amazed at how fast the ball moves from the pitcher, how loud the crack of the bat sounds, and how far the ball soars out in the field. He couldn’t wait to get home, stay up just a little later, and let his daddy pitch him some balls to hit! He was so excited for what he had seen and how it related to him! Pure Motivation and Joy!

Bob Dylan Lyrics “Forever Young”. 8/28/12

Always stay little. Bottle these moments. Let them be young forever.

There are many thoughts that come to my mind as I search for the right pieces of wisdom to pass along daily to these three little blessings. This tune has been a favorite of ours over the years. Just recently I recognized it is every wish I have for our children, every thought as they climb their mountains of life. Most importantly as they grow both physically and spiritually, hopefully, they will humbly enjoy the pursuit of finding what helps them “stay forever young.”
ENJOY!

Forever Young - Playlist: The Very Best of Bob Dylan 1970's

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

Question Me Please… 8/21/12

Just for fun, I conducted an individual interview with Jackson and Abigail. I could not keep a smile off of my face or contain a few giggles as they thought of what to say. Each answer was so individual and unique to their personality. Some answers I could predict, others made me take note of the things I do. (Jackson’s response to what frustrates him:) My hope is to do the same set of questions at the start of each new school year. 2012/2013 Official Homeschool Class! 8/23/12

Hello. Meet my awesome HEALTHY three! There aren’t enough adjectives to describe how each of them make their mommies’ heart beat!
Enjoy our journey as we grow.
JACKSON is my first born, high needs, colicky baby boy. A sensitive, loud, spirited, and energetic little boy. A VERY quick learner, lover of books and puzzles, and ALWAYS making us jump through hoops to keep his not flexible needs met. A total perfectionist, Jackson is a hard working, honest little guy, and is growing his confidence daily. He is our sweet boy, always making us laugh, always keeping us on schedule.
ABIGAIL, an absolute sweetheart. Our first baby girl. Always satisfied and never demanding. Full of energy and spirit, she is our laid back dreamer with a grounded princess attitude always wanting to wear only a dress! Abigail is a hands on learner, loves the arts, music, and dance. She has a dry sense of humor and doesn’t mind speaking the truth of what she thinks. Abigail is overwhelmingly sensitive and forever loyal to others needs. Her favorite thing she says, and she says often, “This is the best day ever!” She is stuffed with love!
ISABELA, “our new baby sissy”. She is a perfect combination of her two older siblings. Loud and demanding, but so sweet and loving. Already imitating all things she observes, she seems to be a quick learner as well. She loves to wink, smile, and make animal noises. She is the funny bird of the house. A show off, always doing silly things for a laugh. Isabela loves crayons, farm animals, balls, and trains, but mostly us! She is a perfect baby girl helping complete our amazing family!

When and Why I Became My Children’s Teacher Part 2

20120916-140121.jpg

20120916-140220.jpg

20120916-140255.jpg
All three little healthy birds continued to grow. Our home became a constant place for learning in spite of the craziness! Days were long and nights even longer as the baby couldn’t get the nighttime sleeping routine.

20120916-140446.jpg

20120916-140529.jpg
Isabela’s life just seemed as happy as her siblings. Mommy’s heart was constantly over the moon with happiness even though there were lots of struggling moments. I continued to research the laws of Tennessee for homeschooling, read lots of blogs, and spoke to a handful of friends I had met while pursuing this very personal option in education.

20120916-141513.jpg
Once I knew my soon to be five year old had officially became a reader, the hardest part of teaching in my opinion, I knew I could indeed balance a five year old kindergartener, a three year old tot, as well as keeping up with a very active one year old! Homeschool, even though we had been doing our schoolwork since Jackson was three, would become official.

20120916-142304.jpg

20120916-142441.jpg
Our curriculum consisted of items we purchased, bits and pieces from my early teaching days, and things that were given to me by some dear teaching friends. We later registered with a private umbrella school to keep up with records and attendance. Our days are planned with me continuing with my plan book. Some days our schedule flows smoothly, somedays not. We work between naps, and snacks, and vineyard to do’s. Jackson and Abigail work together of the morning and while the girls are napping in the afternoon we pick up on our independent studies together. Most days are hard, just like the classroom. Some days they work so hard and are so willing, other days we pace ourself. The luxury is following the guidelines but slowing down or speeding up when needed.

20120916-144017.jpg
The one single thing for me has been the support of their daddy. He had to keep his day job, but he continues to live through us, our stories, their milestones. Without pouring on the support and excitement like he has, I think would have created extra stumbling blocks along the way.

20120916-145610.jpg
So “why” do I do it? Homeschool? Because I can. It wasn’t mapped out in the beginning. I sensed bigger plans were prepared for our family along the way and I listened. Some things happen for a reason. I see the reason to help my family grow in love and learning as my main goal in this world. 24/7 I am a wife and friend, a daughter and a sister, and now a mother. 24/7 I lead, guide, nurture, and educate. Five years this process has taken. Five years, three babies, and a world of learning in our eyes. A mother, completely capable of educating her own children for society, instead of educating society’s children!

When and Why I Became My Children’s Teacher, Part 1

I became my children’s teacher for various reasons. I opened the door long ago, before even having children. I was a public school elementary educator for thirteen years. The on the job training working day in and day out with young children, other professional teachers, as well as parents created many life lessons moving forward.

20120916-073016.jpg
I was in the classroom until four days before Jackson was born. It was never part of my plan to leave the school I loved to become a stay at home mother. I struggled with the idea of leaving society’s professional world that had defined and created me for so many years. My predictable schedule of lesson plans and checked plan books was hard to part with. However, bigger than the sadness of leaving and not being a part of that world, was the bigger emotion of leaving my new colicky, needy baby boy for someone other than myself to care for.

20120916-073726.jpg

20120916-074345.jpg

20120916-074810.jpg
Our little man began to grow. He started showing all that he was learning. A teacher I could see but teaching my own!

20120916-075128.jpg

20120916-075209.jpg

20120916-084316.jpg
During these moments of his growing, I too was growing. When Jackson was eighteen months old, we welcomed a new baby sister, Abigail. I couldn’t imagine not being there for this new life day in and day out.

20120916-085108.jpg

20120916-090328.jpg

20120916-090407.jpg
It was at this time, other than the income lost from leaving the classroom, I knew I was where I was meant to be. Being able to be at home with these growing loving two was an amazing way to spend the day. Growing and learning together.

20120916-090646.jpg

20120916-090727.jpg
Experiencing life from the perspective of these two makes our family seem like the perfect thing to focus our attention on daily. We learned the basics of letters and name writing, colors and numbers. Jackson was learning what we exposed him to, Abigail was there to watch it all.

20120916-092304.jpg

20120916-092347.jpg

20120916-092415.jpg

20120916-092455.jpg
Our two toddlers, especially Jackson, was filling his mind with the wonder of life and learning. Exposing him to the preschool world was a juggle with another loud toddler always by our side. However, he continued with the process. I did the traditional work and kept up with the socializing side of school by exposing them both to preschool group readings and library time. I had to allow Jackson time to mature and become less socially pressured to live up to everyone’s expectations.

20120916-093448.jpg
I guess you could say we needed another. We became pregnant with the third when Jackson was thirty nine months old and Abigail was twenty two months old.

20120916-093925.jpg
Excited and crazy nerves all at the same time. A pregnancy that was scary and high risk made me question my ability to continue educating my two at home. Never wanting to not offer the best for all of my children was the only moment I wondered if home school would be the best and only option moving forward.

20120916-101558.jpg
After many long months, Jackson turned four and in the middle of being a preschooler, their new baby sissy Isabela was born!

20120916-104705.jpg

20120916-110609.jpg

20120916-110846.jpg
Welcomed with love by us all, especially Jackson and Abigail!
I knew the journey to be a mother AND a teacher would be difficult but not impossible.
